IASCD Fall Conference
Assessment for Learning: Classroom Practices that Maximize Student Success
Audience
All K-12 educators, including teachers, teacher leaders, curriculum administrators, principals, AEA personnel or any individuals responsible for school improvement and assessment will benefit from this conference.
Description
This is a one-day conference that highlights Assessment for Learning. The keynote speaker is Jan Chappuis from Educational Testing Services. Jan has worked with Dr. Rick Stiggins for a number of years and is a scholar in the field of assessment and learning, particularly formative assessment. She was featured in ASCD's December 2007/January 2008 Educational Leadership. She and her husband Stephen co-authored the article "The Best Value in Formative Assessment," which explains how ready-made external tests cannot substitute for the observation and questioning that teachers use to plan for the next steps of instruction. Included in the day will be school teams from Iowa who will model how they are using formative measures to determine necessary instruction.
Pre-Conference Offering (8 – 8:45 a.m., Oct. 29): Leading and Managing Successful Learning Teams—A major professional development challenge facing school districts today is in providing the right conditions so that teachers are able to adjust and expand assessment practices. In this session, Jan Chappuis will explain the learning team approach to professional development as it applies to the study and implementation of sound classroom assessment practices using ETS ATI materials.

- 1-Shared Vision
Intended Outcomes
Participants will take away information regarding the variety of assessments that can be used in the classroom and at the building and district levels. They will also develop a deeper understanding of the formative data use, interpretation of data, and how it affects instructional decision-making. Data should be the foundation for systemic change that can positively impact student learning and achievement.
Evaluation
There will be an evaluation form provided at the end of the workshop.
