Professional Development for Iowa School Leaders

Iowa Leadership Academy
Principals Center—Cohort 2

Audience

This opportunity is limited to 200 practicing K-12 principals and assistant principals. Administrators who are serious about improvement of student learning will benefit most, as implementation activities are required.

Description

The purpose of the Principals Center is to create a statewide learning community focused on enhancing leadership practice to improve student learning. Participants are initially accepted for one year, but have the opportunity to continue for multiple years.

The experience begins with a June 2008 summer institute focused on the Thinking, Doing and Being of leadership. The institute features presentations by national speakers alternating with small group dialogue, opportunity for individual reflection and application activities that continue throughout the 2008-09 school year. Speakers include: Pam Robbins, Richard Elmore, and Alan Zimmerman. Participants create an individual professional development plan, and are paired with a colleague for support and mutual accountability.

A Mid-year Institute will be held in November 2008 to provide additional support to participants as they work on their individual plans.

Standards for School Leaders

All six standards are addressed.

Intended outcomes

Partipants will:

  • gain craft knowledge and skills that enhance the principal’s ability to advance the school’s learning goals;
  • be inspired, challenged and committed to the moral purpose of leading;
  • develop a leadership plan of action that will advance the school’s plan of action; and
  • participate in networking/collaboration/coaching that extends beyond the June Institute and supports fulfillment of the action plans.

Evaluation

At each event participants will be asked to give feedback regarding the intended outcomes. In addition, they will be surveyed periodically regarding their perception of the progress they have made on their goals and the impact their leadership plan has had on teaching practice and student learning.
